From Redundancy to Opportunity

Name
Ian Bailey and Neil Dudill
Course
City and Guilds Train as a Gas Engineer (Level 2 and 3)
When redundancy forced Ian Bailey and Neil Dudill to search for a new career path, they decided on a course that would literally change their lives. The former steel workers lost their jobs after their employer Corus decided to make job cuts in January of 2009.

‘We knew we were in danger of being made redundant, so we started looking at re-training.’ Said Ian, 42 ‘We found out that we could get funding for courses relevant to our current skills.’

‘We paid for our initial plumbing course, so we had the right skills to obtain the funding we needed to apply for the gas course.’ said Neil 46.

Research into which path to take had shown the pair that plumbers and gas engineers are amongst the happiest workers and that high earning potential is well documented. This along with the scope for job satisfaction and the opportunity for self employment was a big draw for the men.

‘We knew others who had trained at MET and had a positive learning experience then gone on to have a successful career in the plumbing and heating industry.’

After successfully completing their plumbing City & Guilds 6129 course, Neil and Ian have returned to MET and are currently completing their fourth course Train as a Gas Engineer (Level 2&3).   Once completed they will have all the relevant skills and qualifications to go on to a have a successful career in the industry.

So would they recommend MET to others in the same position?

Says Neil ‘I wanted to be self employed and in control of my career, and because of the quality of the training I’ve received at MET I feel I can do that. I’ve recommended MET to several friends already.’

Ian concludes ‘Don’t be disheartened by redundancy, take it in your stride and see it as a new beginning. I went to MET with the view to further my career and I feel confident and happy that I’ll be able to do that now. I’d happily recommend MET to anyone.’
