From the MOD to being a Gas Engineer
Name
Gary Speirs
Course
Multi Skilled Gas Engineer with Electric (Level 2 and 3)
Gary Speirs had initially considered a career in Plumbing when he joined Civvy Street after 24 years in HM Forces. Gary 40 of Barrow-in-Furness is currently studying for his City & Guilds 6132 Gas Engineering with Part P.
‘I always fancied being a plumber but when I started researching courses about two years ago being a Gas Engineer sounded better.’
Gary was introduced to MET by Kevin Glasgow, his employer, who is also an ex service man.
‘I came to the Rotherham site for a visit, and was so impressed by the academy’s facilities that I signed up the same day. Everyone was really friendly and helpful. Tim our instructor is extremely patient and understanding. He’s always there for you if he thinks you’re stuck with anything. He’s an excellent instructor.’
So why did Gary decide to re-train for a trade?
‘I wanted the challenge of working on my own and not as part of team as I used to. To know that you are personally responsible for a job well done is extremely satisfying and I love that no two jobs are the same. Gaining a new qualification is also something to be proud of and to be able to help someone by safely fixing things around the home is enough job satisfaction for me.’
And what would you say to anyone considering training with MET?
‘If you want to change your life and are looking for a new and challenging career then choose MET. Excellent facilities, professional instructors and a comfortable learning environment. It makes you confident knowing the path you’ve chosen is the right one.’
