Everyone is aware that it’s an economical minefield out there, but whatever the state of the economy people will always need good plumbers. Work in the domestic field continues to thrive, despite the setbacks of recession. How often do we hear about someone having trouble finding a good plumber to fix their central heating system?
So if it's time to make a change, a closer look at a plumbing career could offer everything you need.
A lot of people decide to go into plumbing so they can become self-employed and control their own career path. The majority of newly qualified plumbers over the age of twenty five choose to work for themselves in the domestic market. It makes a lot of sense when you look at how much work is available, and how much money can be made when you've built your reputation.
Industry recognised plumbing training courses generally lead to C&G (City & Guilds) certifications as a minimum. Students leaving school will typically go to college full-time followed by work experience and NVQ's.
It's more common for re-trainers to learn their trade part-time so they can still afford to pay their bills, although MET offer full, part time and evening courses, and are therefore more geared up to meet their needs, as our courses are less rigid and focus more on the high-demand skill-sets. Mature students will generally pay up front for commercial training courses, but MET can help find funding and the trainees are able to fine-tune their training to suit the work they'll get into.
With a basic qualification you'll be able to work on a range of plumbing jobs. You'll also be able to qualify in supplementary skills which will allow you to take on bigger jobs yourself. Additional skills could be in plastering or tiling, basic electrical work or energy efficiency. You don't have to take everything at once, but add more skills as you go along. Your customer-base will broaden, and the jobs will be more profitable. If you can take on small electrical tasks or handle gas whilst you're on a job, you won't waste time working to someone else's calendar.
To round up, if you're looking to work for yourself in commercial plumbing/gas/electricity or renewable energy, the most effective route will be via a specialist training company like MET.
