Plans to install solar systems on Olympic site discussed

People who have taken solar training courses could find themselves working on the 2012 Olympic site, reports suggest.

The Evening Standard reported that the chairman of the Olympic Delivery Authority (ODA), John Armitt, told a construction conference that plans were being considered which would mean solar panels were installed on the roof of the £214 million aquatics centre.

According to the report, Mr Armitt said that talks were currently taking place with the venue's builder, Balfour Beatty, about installing photovoltaic panels in the wave-shaped roof.

The power generated by the solar panels would be used to heat the two 50-metre pools and the diving pool, and supply power to other venues.

Should the plans be given the go-ahead, people who have taken solar training courses could find their skills in demand.

It is believed the ODA began considering using solar power after it was revealed that photovoltaic panels on the Beijing Olympics' aquatics centre have reduced the venue's power consumption by 30 per cent.ADNFCR-1529-ID-18512732-ADNFCR
