Government to relax planning rules about solar panels

The demand for people who have taken solar training courses is set to increase after the government confirmed new rules will make it easier for homeowners to install solar panels and other microgeneration technologies.

Officials confirmed that, from April 6th, all homeowners will be able to install microgeneration equipment, such as solar panels, without needing to get planning permission.

This could mean that there is an increase in the work available for people who have trained to install such systems. In the past, many homeowners were discouraged from opting for solar panels because of the delays and costs associated with the planning process.

Planning minister Caroline Flint explained: "Technology like solar panels can make a real difference, but homeowners can be put off by the time and expense of getting planning permission.

"We think it is right that people have more freedom to make these changes providing it has no impact on others."

Energy minister Malcolm Wicks added: "Installing small-scale devices has just become a lot easier for homeowners.

"Now planning permission has been relaxed, I believe this will encourage more people to install these devices."
