Plumbing training 'may be needed to fit out Olympic village'

People with plumbing training may find that their skills and expertise could be needed to kit out accommodation for some medal-winning athletes in the future.

This is because building firm Mears is currently forging ahead with construction work after winning a £9 million contract to fit out the 2012 Olympic village.

A total of 2,800 flats are being built in east London to provide homes for athletes of all kinds during the Games.

These will then become social housing or sold on privately after the event.

Mears is installing the heating and plumbing into 300 flats at the site, where top names such as Jessica Ennis, the Brit who won gold in the heptathlon at the World Championships in Berlin at the weekend, are likely to stay.

As well as providing homes for athletes, the Olympic village will also be full of shops, restaurants and leisure facilities, plus an International Zone, where they can meet with friends and family who come to spur the participants on.
