Man with plumbing training heads to contest in Canada

A man with plumbing training from north-east England will be flying to Canada to represent his country in an international trade skill contest.

Christopher Lonsdale, 22, from Country Durham, will be participating in WorldSkills Calgary 2009 as part of a 26-person team from the UK, the Northern Echo reported.

The competition invites tradesmen and women from 51 countries to come and show off their skills in everything from cooking and floristry, to landscape gardening and bricklaying.

Simon Bartley, the UK team's manager, said that over the coming months, "Christopher will need to train hard to make sure that he is up to the world-class standard he needs to be at, to be able to compete against the best young plumbers in the world".

According to the London Evening Standard, people with plumbing training have a better chance than those after white-collar positions of securing employment during the recession.
