Hooton Levitt - Maltby, Rotherham

Full time Mum for 13 years, previously to this, Sue was a Security Guard at the National Gallery, London.

Full time Plumbing NVQ Level 2/City & Guilds 6089 including Technical Certificate
Why Re-train?
Sue had heard of the financial rewards associated with Plumbing and wants to be able to support her 3 young children through university in the future.
Sue is a hands on person and didn't feel happy about potentially working in a 9-5 office environment or as a shop worker which she feels are roles that are traditionally offered to working Mothers. Sue is looking to the long-term and would eventually like to run her own business with the unique selling point of being a female plumber.
Do you have any previous trade experience?
No
What made you choose MET-UK as a training provider?
Sue had been referred to MET-UK by a friend and the centre happened to be located within three miles from her home. Once Sue had visited the centre she felt at ease and supported by the genuine nature of the people that she met.
"The test was a surprise, as I didn't automatically associate maths and science with plumbing, but I passed and felt a great sense of achievement, as I haven't been in that situation for such a long time, it was comforting to know that my mind hadn't slowed down having been out of work and education for so long.
What did your work placement involve?
I've been completing my work placement with Robert Prettie & Co Ltd. A typical day would involve arrival at 9:30am (they allowed me a later start so that I could take my daughter to school). We've been working on a contract refurbishing an old peoples home, and so a typical day has included taking out old existing bathrooms and replacing them with new bathroom suites. I've been very hands on working with a team of people have been happy to train me, and who've been very supportive.
Are you happy with your decision to retrain as a Plumber?
I've been very happy with my decision, although it's been harder than I initially thought. I was intimidated by getting back into maths after being out of work and education for so long and by the amount of literature used during the course. I can find it difficult juggling night study with being a Mum, but on the whole I've found the course to be challenging and have found a real sense of achievement.
Would you recommend MET-UK to a friend?
I would recommend MET-UK to a friend; I've found the experience to be very positive.
