MoD Service Leaver (now a qualified Gas Engineer) CHRIS MURPHY tells us about the importance of work placement and offers tips for success:

Finding a placement is as easy as murphy's law!Chris said:

"Finding a placement for all students is paramount to the Gas Course in order to maximise study time and gain enough work experience.

Whilst MET-UK will assist with finding a placement for the students, I took the view that my placement was a critical part of the course, so I decided to find my own."

How did you find an employer?

"I found one company and looked into how the company was run, how many engineers, what was their market (domestic or commercial), with the course being domestic, I made calls to find out who was responsible for the engineers.

Once this information had been gained, I made an appointment to see the gentleman concerned. Our meeting was then cancelled by him and after a number of telephone calls to rearrange, we finally met.

After a lengthy discussion about the course and what I hoped to achieve when I finished the course it was agreed that he would give me the opportunity.

I have now worked everyday during the placement with the company and have been lucky enough to have a very good engineer to work alongside.

By putting in the effort at the start, I have been offered a PERMANENT POSITION with the company prior to taking the ACS EXAM!!

The key message is work hard and never give up; you will get out of your training what you put in!"
