MOD - Learner Case Study, Graham Walker Graham Walker Name Corporal GJ Walker Age 30 Where from? Corporal Graham Walker was part of 23 Squadron 16 CS MED Regiment Course NVQ level 2 (6012/21): Domestic Natural Gas – Installation and Maintenance. Start date: September 2003 The NVQ level 2 (6012/21) is aligned ACS modules – Core Gas Safety (CCN1), Water Heaters (WAT1) and Central Heating Systems (CEN1). Delivered over an intensive 27-week period, the training course enabled Graham to become eligible for CORGI registration and so be able to work safely and legally in the Gas industry. Work Placement Graham was matched with a local Gas Employer –DB Gas Heating Services of Swinton, South Yorkshire - for his work placement. The employer was fully briefed on the nature and intensity of the training programme and was chosen after a ‘Skill-Scan’ in order to confirm that the type of work undertaken would be relevant to that covered on the NVQ. Graham’s ‘Supervising Engineer’ on placement was a part-time Gas Trainer / Assessor – this was an additional benefit of the ‘Skill-Scan’. The employer was aware of the constraints on time that service leavers such as Graham Walker have. Graham was able to ‘plan in’ the days that he was able to attend his work placement. His work placement employer was very flexible as he appreciated the attitude, skills and work ethic that Graham brought to the team on the days that he was able to attend. Patrick Baxter – Senior Gas Engineering Trainer / Assessor “Due to hard work and preparation, I am pleased to congratulate Graham Walker on his performance in completing the 27- week intensive NVQ level 2. The Unit 10 assessment is the NVQ equivalent of ACS module – Core Gas Safety. This unit assesses an ability to work safely in the Gas industry. Graham achieved an excellent performance in the Unit 10 assessment. I believe that the skills gained in the Armed Forces played a significant part in Graham’s ability to retrain successfully on this intensive programme.” Tony Lee – General Manager - Gas Maintenance & Training (GMT) Ltd. Rotherham “Having spoken with the Placement Team at MET-UK regarding Graham’s work placement employers inability to offer a permanent position, we decided to arrange an interview. We have a good relationship with MET-UK and have often taken work placements in the past. We were confident in the training provision and decided to offer Graham Walker a position as a Heating Engineer. He will work alongside a more experienced engineer initially, before moving onto a more independent position as he gains his experience.”
