Helen Plumbs for Great New CareerHelen Schofield’s prayers were answered when she found out about MET-UK’s City and Guilds 6129 Level 2 Technical Certificate in Basic Plumbing Skills for Women. The single-mum-of-two from Rotherham had to give up her former career as a care assistant due to the evening shifts. “I was finding it difficult to find carers for the children at night and my 10 year-old has ADHD. “In the end I had to give up that job and I fancied a career change something that paid better money to help support my children. “I went along to my local Job Centre and we looked at different career choices and plumbing seemed perfect. I just missed out on another course because it was full, but then we found Met-UK’s course on the internet,” says Helen. The City and Guilds 6129 Level 2 Technical Certificate in Basic Plumbing for Women was government funded, but Helen will need the second part of the NVQ in gas to become Corgi registered and a fully qualified plumber. She is managing to survive at the moment on her benefits, but is raring to get out there and do plumbing full-time. Helen has already gained work experience with a Barnsley company who are contractors for Bramall Construction. She is helping to install bathrooms in the social housing market. The course was held over two evenings a week for seven months. The course has been brilliant. The practical side is great and I can’t wait to get into the workshop. I really need to do the next part of the course now to become Corgi registered and start work as a plumber. “My kids go to Catholic school and they say prayers for me everyday to pass my exams. They get so excited when they find out I’ve passed – they jump around and they’re so proud. “Being a single mum, I really don’t need a man now I can fix my own toilet! says Helen.
